ABOUT HOT YOGA

Hot yoga is more formally and more precisely called "BIKRAM YOGA" We just listed it as "hot yoga" on the front page so you wouldn't get it confused with other colder forms of yoga. The stuff we do here is hot, sweaty and produces dramatic results!

The first emphasis of Bikram Yoga is on correctness of form, also called "trying the right way." Just as important is the evolutionary nature of the class. You decide how far you are going to go on any given day knowing you will have the opportunity to continually make new demands of yourself. The sequence requires tremendous concentration, careful listening to instructions, patience, determination, trust and discipline. As these are required of you, they also develop within you.

If you have never done any yoga before, you are a perfect candidate for starting your practice here with us. We do only beginning level yoga postures-nothing that will hurt or injure you. The Bikram Sequence is challenging, but it is also incredibly accessible. We are not going to ask to do anything your body is not ready to do. It is a common misconception is one must be fit and flexible in order to do yoga. This is not true. All that is required is willingness and a want desire to have for a better quality of life.

Many athletes use Bikram's method as part of their training regimen. Bikram Yoga does offers a vigorous and through workout in addition to fostering much-needed flexibility. Make no mistake about it, we are not going to sit in one position and chant for ninety minutes! The combination of heat, postures, and pacing ensure that everyone-no matter their level of fitness or yoga experience can find the edge of their physical ability.

In a Bikram Yoga class you will do 26 postures (including two breathing exercises) twice each within the span of 90 minutes. Class is conducted in a room heated to approximately 105 degrees (which is actually only a few degrees warmer than your normal body temperature of 98.6). Each pose is meant to be performed to the best of one's ability and then held still. Stillness is a primary principle of hatha yoga asana and something that the Bikram method emphasizes. The sequence has no continuous movement as with vinyasa or sun salutations. This again insures anybody can do it--- any age, size, shape, condition, or background. Remember it is never too late to improve your health!

A certified instructor will guide you through the series. He or she does not do the exercises with you, but instead focuses on ensuring the use of good alignment and providing motivation. You will learn how the poses enhance the mind and how they relax, strengthen, reshape and heal the body.

The series begins by waking up the body and expanding the lungs through deep breath work that pumps fresh oxygen into the circulatory system. The next few poses work every muscle and joint in the fingers, arms, shoulders, neck and upper spine. The spine is stretched in four directions to realign hunched shoulders, tight chests, and backs. This is followed my balancing postures than combine the skill of concentration, patience, determination and self-control. The sequence continues to work systematically through the body, leaving not one organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, blood vessel, nerve or gland unattended.. When your honest, hard work is finished, 100% of the body is optimally functioning. You will know what it is like to have ENERGY!

Come see for yourself how Bikram Yoga delivers total health by balancing and improving each system in the body in order to prevent illness, injury, and limit the effects of aging. What are you waiting for? (view schedule >>)
